Little Red Voxel Hood

Terrific rendition. I love the juxtaposition of an old story with an old style of gaming. Great stuff as always from sevensheaven.

Octo-Pussy!

Octo-Pussy! , originally uploaded by frc37

The one 'girl' I had planned for the animal hat series has arrived. It took quite a bit of time to finish this one, but I'm happy with the results. She was fun to create a hat for, especially since the likeness is of my former coworker Serene, so it was easy to work from. I think it turned out great and I liked doing the light bulbs. That came out really well.

In case you're curious, the reference photo is below.

Things to do while you're sick

Many people are getting sick these days, which means cough into yo elbow, stay home, drink plenty of liquids, and most likely contaminate your laptop with your germs as you reach the outside world via the interweb.

The image... let's just say "serene did it".

She's sick and yes she did, and here's the shout out.

Catboy lives!

Catboy lives!, originally uploaded by frc37.

Meet catboy. After I finished panda, i went to cook a late dinner and while eating, I felt I had enough creative energy to finish off catboy. This one still needs some work compared to panda boy, and I think it has to do with line weights and the fact that his skin tone and hair are the same. I think he's not bold enough, and his bowtie could be darker along with his pants.

Overall, I'm happy with the halo around him. Ha ha didn't expect this to turn out the way it did but I'm happy.

I'm really happy with this one. he came out funky and weird, and I really like it! Although I went back and fixed the ear to be more balanced, and so I do need to fix this one a bit before its finalized. I'm still on the fence about the monotones, because it seems to only work for the panda color scheme. Ha ha we'll see what comes of this series.

Subaru transformer

Subaru transformer, originally uploaded by frc37.

Bumble bee was never meant to be cool! Having him as a slick car just defeated the persona of the character, changing from a small fledgling into a noble guardian. I rather like this suzuki hatchback I found in the magazine. It's more fitting to the bumblebee I know.

If they had made him into the volkswagen beetle we know today, I know he'd lose mad respect.

Saw this in a magazine. I guess its a good conversion since tape casettes are done with and wouldn't make sense, so a usb drive would be cool but I really doubt he'd be much of a nuisance like he is sometimes in the cartoon. Although if this were true, then soundwave would have to be like, an ipod or laptop?

Probably better than that stupid satellite he was in the movie.

I saw this in a magazine, and thought it was cool to blog about. I'm a big fan of both artists and so I thought it was cool they were in this mag ad i saw while perusing some magazines at a store in HK. It's probably illegal to be taking pictures of a magazine, but then again it doesn't make sense for me to buy a mag for one advertisement.

Anyway, I dig.

Eye Love 1984!

Eye Love 1984!, originally uploaded by ☆ peat ☆.

Great work from graffiti artist Peat Wolleager. I've kept with his work during my days at artsprojekt and his distinctive use of eyes and his signature poppy colors really stand out in urban scenes and I think thats why I like it. Also because almost all his work is stencil-based, the process is really awesome to watch. Look him up on youtube if you get the chance.

Of all of Luca's work, I think the one style I've always admired is his serif typography, because they have a great sense of space and shape, and even though I'm not a tattoo person myself, I'd definitely let me ink my back with a cool word in his stylish type!

Reach movin up

Day 3, originally uploaded by Hello Reach.

When I used to work at artsprojekt, Reach got the notice to join but he got backlogged in the many list of artists applying to get in. He actually didnt' have time to maintain his work onto AP before I left the company, but I could already see he was moving on up and his work was already getting more exposure.

Hailing from Kaohsiung, Taiwan I had an affinity for his work seeing as he was a small time graffiti artist from a small island like Taiwan, and he slowly moved on up.

I can already see his work has gotten more vibrantly sick as I see his more recent work and hopefully I can meet him soon, seeing as I know his assistant Peggy.

Great work Reach!

So I'm flying off tomorrow to Taiwan and there's nothing I hate more than planes and the whole airport experience. I don't really know who does but I especially hate the disease tank for 13 hours in the plane, the cramped sardine-like corridors, and the whole process of waiting around so long and getting luggage, going through customs, etc.

It almost makes me wish I could fly myself, not piloting but superman flying. That'd be so sweet!

The Launch of EVANTSAIDESIGN.COM!

I almost forgot to blog about this. This weekend was the launch of my design portfolio site, E7Design.

It's been such a long time coming, not really sure how to start out since it feels a bit surreal, but I'm sure I'll move into this nicely, since its such a cozy space.

Now, I don't have my flash stuff up yet, since the newest iterations of flash always give me problems, with new scripts and obscuring all the knowledge I used to know. But I'll be updating each day as I get to it, trying to put up more and more stuff, so tune in, subscribe, keep posted cuz more wild and cooky stuff is sure to come out of this head-ached noggin.

Special thanks to Demian Lee for helping to build my site and dealing with my nitpickiness to get this place up and alive. Visit his site at http://demianlee.com/portfolio/

And while we're at it, lets just do a whole bunch of shameless plugs of all my friends that have supported me. Long live the thundercorns!

Pug + Whiskey

Hello hello! I'd like to introduce Mr. Pug aka "Alfonso" into the mix. My friend Heather really got a kick out of this one, cuz the face looks so glazed over. Then again, what pug doesn't look drunk?

So what is Alfonso's favorite drink to slurp? I think a whiskey is classey enough right?

Live NIKE

I got hired by NIKE!

Ha ha just kidding. In my DREAMS! I've always liked how revolutionary NIKE graphic design has kept reinventing itself, and the designers that tend to gravitate towards workings with the brand are astounding.

I worked on this one a long time ago, but I could never get it to work right. The colors weren't right, I didn't know how to activate the space etc.

Now I can say this is a good step forward, with a good color scheme and an interesting space. The colors meshed well together and the gradients helped to bring the shoe out.

This was based off of my favorite hi-top NIKE shoe, the Terminator-Hi, so this is my tribute to NIKE design and the shoe.

Much respect!

The Other Silly Two

I finished these other two mid-week. It's a big change of pace not designing robots. It's equally enjoyable though.

Smoking theme? Ha ha not intentionally though. I find smoking stylish, and that's how its usually portrayed. It's never portrayed as healthy or anything, but the genre being represented, this aristocratic gentleman's club, makes total sense with it and it's really comical seeing animals having to do human things.

The point of the work is supposed to jar the viewer.

I worked on the deer first and it turned out really great and it was fun drawing the horns and having hte smoke entangled.

Then, working on the monkey, It was kind of weird having such an expression on the face and not having some sense of reason as to what he's looking at. I experimented with many alternatives, from a flask, to a jack daniels bottle but the pipe-smoking was the best bet, and the smoke entrancing him.

The Animals Are Here!

So this is a new series I started today while out sick from "over-partying"(if you can call it that) this weekend.

The series is a comical bunch with a few yet to be finalized titles. I came up with "the Dilly Dally Society" and "The Distinguished Gentlecritters" for now, but the name aside, this is about animal heads on human bodies.

I don't usually draw animals, so this one took a bit of time in figuring out how I wanted to portray a texture, and I almost wandered into doing photoshop for all the textures but I felt that would take too long.

After the initial workup, Heather pointed out each piece needs a little nuance to make it interesting. Hence, the cup of tea(or milk) and the afro comb. I think it worked out nicely.

This is a contrast to my "Robot Academy" pieces where there's plenty of detail, this time I'm trying to make it simpler.

Party at da Robot House!

I started out sketching this out, and it took over 24 hours to actually draw just the robot itself.

Then, figured that it definitely needed more personality and life, especially since the idea is the insides of a giant robot.

So I struggled with sitting down and finding enough patience in me to draw appropriate models for the passengers/tenants.

A couple days ago I bit the bullet and delve back into this project, drawing simple humans. I traced them from some personal photos of people I took in Shibuya.

After the hours upon hours I took to draw the people, I tried it out and something wasn't right. There still wasn't enough color, and so as much as I hated the thought I'd have to go back and color each and everyone a different unique color, I ended up sitting back down and burning the midnight oil till I started seeing stars.

The end result was spectacular.

Next morning, I FINALLY got to put the people in and see the finished product. I'm immensely satisfied and flattered to hear some dope responses.

DESIGNed for War

I lately had an idea about a robot girl that destroyed herself. I thought about how my friend Nozomi was talking about the commonality of suicide in Japan as of late, coupled with the decrease in birth rate. For Japan, they worry about who will take care of the elderly through feeding the economy, and its kind of eerie to think about if Japan starts to get smaller and more spacious because people are just dying off. Kinda reminds you of 'children of men' eh?

Think Japan, the home of cyberpunk influences, starts to actually integrate robots into society, but I mean you think robots are built lightweight? Usually they are built of metal, to last and serve a lifetime. At the same time, you design a robot, maybe to protect humans or fight wars for us, who's to give them a choice one of these days if they suddenly decide they want to do something else.

Robots, if they were designed for war, could they end the war by ending themselves? Think about it, can we stop more wars with war? Probably can't stop wars altogether because its about fear, its about money, its about theology. But I thought this piece came out well, considering war is such a topic as of late, along with depression, economy, etc.

It came out well, with the wires spewing out. Thanks to Tony & Heather for critiquing and supporting.
